Intragastric Balloon
The gastric balloon is a non-surgical, reversible weight loss procedure. A soft silicone balloon is placed inside the stomach and filled with saline solution, taking up space and helping you feel full with smaller amounts of food. It is typically in place for 6–12 months.

Non-surgical weight loss — no cuts, no anaesthetic
The balloon is inserted via endoscopy (a thin tube through the mouth) while deflated, then filled with 400–700ml of sterile saline. It creates a feeling of fullness after small meals.
Suitable for adults with a BMI of 27–40 who have not succeeded with diet and exercise alone, or as a bridge to bariatric surgery for higher BMI patients.
Most patients lose 10–15% of their total body weight during the 6–12 month balloon period. Results depend on diet and lifestyle changes made during treatment.
The procedure is performed as a day case. Most patients return to normal activities within 1–3 days. Nausea and discomfort are common in the first 1–2 weeks.
The balloon is removed endoscopically after 6–12 months, also without surgery. The procedure takes around 20 minutes.
The balloon is a tool, not a cure. The habits and lifestyle changes developed during the balloon period are key to maintaining weight loss after removal.
